Meanly because of some past distribution policies in the USA (Asia as well), it seems that GP, JLC and a some more are suffering from past commercial habits, meaning that the prices of their goods sticks with 'discount etc...' (in the early 60's-80's brands were fighting a market share against the ever successful leaders like Rolex/Patek. As a result yes and till now you can find some good deals on those brands depending on the model you chose and where you are located.
In the long run, those usage will disappear, and if you are looking for the latest gears, chances are you will not get those extraordinary deals. Beside in the case of JLC, I know they do all they can to reduce the number of agents worldwide and monitor all their timepieces, so the future looks ever promising in terms of collecting.
No matter what, JLC and GP are both fine mechanics, so money wise or not, those are pieces that are manufactured with a real ancient know-how, in my knowledge JLC movement have often been housed in famous branded watches other than JLC...
