From distance, ss, white gold or platinum might look about the same. If you have the same model watch done in all three materials and you pay close attention to them, you'll notice the differences right away. SS watch will look slightly more dull and cooler than the white gold. The piece done in Platinum will look even shinier and a tad towards grey than the white gold.
But, as you said in your post, after you strap these babied on your wrist and feel the heft of the white gold, and then the weight of the platinum when compared to ss, there is no way that you can't appreciate the feel of those precious metals. Who cares if they look the same from the distance? Is YOUR pleasure that counts when wearing one. I'm not buying a white gold or a platinum piece for others to notice (that's why i can't stand yellow gold) it but for myself to enjoy the weight, the feeling and the fact that i know i'm wearing a precious piece.
