In 1700 Nicolas Fatio (Swiss), brevets the use of the bearing Ruby for pivots. The use of the Rubies replaced the ball bearings, reducing considerably frictions and enabling to better retain the oil which was the cause for various breakdowns and stoppings. Ruby used in Horology: Natural Rubies or Sapphires. Currently synthetic coloured Corindon, laser drilled.
