the use of more modern tools such as CNC equipment for machining, spring winding, and other fabrication steps have enabled watch to watch consistancy to improve. The same goes for CAD for designing and tolerance stack-ups and modern optical measurment tools for dimensional checks of components. I'm sure without all the advances the the above items, there would not be such a relatively large supply of reliable mechanical watches as there is today.
