We often talk of 'limited editions', where most of the regular production is already limited. Panerai did distinguish between the two, where the regular production is always limited and in small numbers - they called the 'one-offs' 'Special Editions'. These SE were not always the rarest and the most sought-after. Oddly enough, the positioning of these was also not always clear (i.e. the last few Regattas) and I could never understand what they were trying to achieve? Did they commemorate a non-existing event?  Look at the early PVDs, pre As, one year regular models, etc - they brought more collectibility and premium than most SEs. Where are the special Rads standing (PAMs 78, 80, 65, 163)? 50-60% of their retail?

For a collector like myself, the decision is usually coming from the heart, but I agree that I like some sense of security.  it's like buying a great wine - not difficult to spend 60K-100K on a PP that we know is a sure thing, but do I really have a passion for it?  I would like to think that the object of my current passion turns out to be the collectible piece of tomorrow...

Happy wishful thinking Wink

Cheers,
